Wildood Guitars says:

When a master craftsman builds an instrument by hand all by themselves from start to finish, it imbues the instrument with a special brand of magical mojo that is easy to see, hear, and feel but hard to quantify. They reflect the individual personality of the builder so much that they attain distinctly human quality that makes them feel like an old friend from the moment you pick them up. It’s almost as if they have souls of their own, and nowhere is this soulfulness more evident than in our collection of Fender Masterbuilt instruments.

The twelve people who currently hold the title of Masterbuilder have all spent years learning the ropes from the masters that came before them until they climbed the ranks and reached the upper echelon of elite guitar builders.
Wildwood Guitars talks about James Tyler Guitars:

James Tyler is a bit of a mysterious figure. He rarely gives interviews, and he doesn’t care to advertise, relying on word-of-mouth to grow his business. Here’s what we do know: after spending his teenage years taking apart his guitars “for no good reason,” he worked his way through college by doing repair work on guitars and cars. One has to imagine that this unique combination of experiences gave him an appreciation for old-world manufacturing techniques and modern precision engineering.

After spending a couple years as the main repair and restoration specialist at Norman’s Rare Guitars, he graduated to building guitars. At first, he assembled guitars out of parts from Schecter, Kubicki, and custom-made Tom Anderson parts. This was right as the Super Strat craze was taking off, and everyone in LA was looking for hot-rodded guitars with lightning-fast handfeel. James was the right man for the job.

True to form, James moved his shop to a building in North Hollywood with no signs of any kind that would even provide a hint that it was James Tyler’s HQ. But, greatness can’t escape notice for long, and soon there was a steady stream of renowned L.A. musicians trickling into his shop.

Word spread like wildfire that James was building instruments that played beautifully and sounded absurdly good, and pretty soon he built a large clientele. Thus began the era when the sound of James Tyler guitars dominated the airwaves. case in point: the most ubiquitous song of the eighties, Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean, featured David Williams playing the song’s iconic riff on his Tyler. Tylers formed the sonic backbone of countless hits in the eighties, cementing James Tyler’s place in the pantheon of guitar Valhalla.

Tylers surged in popularity from then on, but James was never content to rest on his laurels. He pushed forward with innovative new finish techniques, and he came up with some of the coolest colors in the world with names like Psychedelic Vomit, Alien Guano, Barn Find, Malibu Beach Shmear, Burning Water, and our Wildwood-Exclusive finish, Ice Water. He also developed his own proprietary pickups, which sound absolutely otherworldly.

So, what is the secret behind the quality of James Tyler’s guitars? How did they impress so many studio musicians? The secret is James’s commitment to combining precise modern manufacturing techniques with old-world craftsmanship. Sure, they may use computerized milling machines, laser machines, 3D modeling stations, and engineering techniques from the aerospace industry in order to make sure that each guitar plays easily, but they make sure to leave plenty of room for the human element. Each neck is still given its final shape by hand, and the Tyler team spends hours sanding and painting the bodies and dressing the frets.

After that, each guitar goes through rigorous…actually, “insane” is probably a better word for the level of testing they put each guitar through after assembly. They set it up, plug it in, and test it thoroughly to make sure it will meet the standards of the most demanding player, then they set it up again before they ship it out. The folks at James Tyler often say that they want each guitar they build to feel like an old friend when you play it for the first time. Their commitment to balancing sweat equity with Sci-Fi engineering allows them to hit the mark every time.

Les Paul Customs are the sort of guitars that strike fear into the hearts of men. They’re refined beasts, sure, but beneath that sophisticated veneer they’re all rock and roll muscle…

The Wildwood Spec 1957 Les Paul Custom features a solid mahogany body for extra tonal heft and exceptional resonance. The ebony fingerboard is also attached with hot hide glue for improved energy transfer, so these guitars are quite loud and resonant when unplugged! Our Wildwood Spec Custom ‘Buckers only improve this excellent natural tone by delivering sweet, vintage-perfect tone. After paying so much attention to replicating the sound of the originals, we had to make sure they looked right, too! So, we equipped them with waffle-back tuners, gold hardware, and vintage-accurate plastics to complete the package. We are so proud of these Wildwood Spec 1957 Les Paul Customs, and we know you will find them just as inspiring as we do!

Here’s what Wildwood Guitars had to say about this machine:

…Imagine an enormous wooden statue of a fearsome warrior poised to enter battle. Now imagine this timber soldier coming to life after being animated by two malevolent rock and roll wizards named Grover Jackson and Dave Friedman, then going off to wage war in Valhalla. That will give you an (admittedly impressionistic) picture of how the Friedman Metro-D sounds: an enormous all-powerful vintage entity that packs serious woody wallop.

The Metro-D is Friedman’s take on a staple of American guitar design: the set-neck solidbody. Almost every builder makes some variant on this design, and it was only a matter of time before Dave and Grover put their madness-tinged spin on it. This particular model sports a classic tonewood pairing (mahogany body with a maple top) which gives it exceptional warmth, fullness, punch, and articulation.

When you bring this beast to life with an amplifier and a little alternating current, you will be astounded at the way these guitars cop vintage-style sounds while remaining wholly unique. It’s as if Dave and Grover unearthed a secret stash of vintage guitars no one has ever seen somewhere in the desert outside of Los Angeles and started selling them!

This isn’t hyperbole, either; they really do share lots of qualities with vintage instruments. Old guitars tend to have a dry sort of resonance because the moisture in the wood dries up. This makes the guitar speak forcefully with a supremely clear voice, and it also makes them lively and touch-sensitive. Despite their clarity, they often sound bigger to our ears, because they’ve been “opened-up” by age.

I’m not sure how Grover and Dave managed to imbue these guitars with these characteristics (probably dark magic), but they have succeeded in giving these guitars the sort of spectacular vintage-accurate voice I just described. When you combine this straight-from-the-seventies resonance with the classic tone of an all-mahogany guitar, it is simply magical.

These Metro-Ds come equipped with plenty of modern features that make life easier for the discerning modern player, too. The electronics are simple and powerful: a slightly-underwound Classic humbucker in the neck for thick, rich sounds and a slightly overwound Classic Plus in the bridge for all the punch and crunch you’ll ever need.

The Friedman Metro-D also plays ridiculously fast thanks to its comfortable shape and its 10″-14″ compound radius. You can chord easily low on the neck and bend notes with ease up high. Speaking of buttery goodness, each Metro-D also receives a full PLEK setup at the factory to ensure maximum precision during one of the most crucial parts of the setup process: fret-leveling and intonation.

So, there you have it: the Friedman Metro-D is a fitting tribute to the set-neck humbucker-equipped guitars that shaped rock and roll history. They sit within tradition, but they put their own spin on it. They feel familiar and fresh at the same time, and we know they will inspire you to reach tonal Valhalla…

From Wildwood Guitars:

…The story of Suhr Guitars not with creation but with destruction. In 1976, just a couple years after he started playing, he built a body to pair with a custom neck Bob Benedetto made him. he sent it off to a well-reputed repairman to have stars inlaid on the fingerboard. When he went to pick it up after months of waiting, he was rather disappointed to find his guitar looking worse than when he dropped it off. In a rage, John Suhr did his best Pete Townshend impression and smashed his guitar to bits before vowing to just do all his repair work himself. That do-it-yourself spirit is still at the core of everything Suhr does. Throughout their history, there is a common theme: when no one can meet John Suhr’s exacting standards for quality, he and his team just figure out a way to do it themselves.

You can trace John’s DIY work ethic to the man who built the neck on the guitar he smashed, Robert Benedetto. John would hang around the renowned archtop builder’s shop and ask for tips on lutherie as a young man, and he received some excellent advice in return for his persistence. In an interview from a 2009 edition of Musician’s Hotline, he said that Mr. Benedetto told him “If you want to do this, you will just jump in. You don’t need lessons–you either have what it takes or you don’t.”

John Suhr set out to prove that he had what it took. He took a job as a repairman at Rudy’s Music Shop, a store on 48th Street in New York that happened to be a Schecter parts dealer (back in the eighties, Shecter was a parts supplier renowned for their high-quality bodies and necks). Pretty soon, on a small workbench in the boiler room, John was assembling these parts into kit guitars to sell in the showroom. Soon, these guitars–branded with John and Rudy’s last names on the headstock–attracted quite a bit of attention. Lou Reed and Mark Knopfler both started gigging with their Pensa-Suhrs, and business was booming.

But, John Suhr grew restless and dove deep into the world of electronics. He did some mad scientist experiments on a Marshall head and talked to the owner of Custom Audio Electronics, Bob Bradshaw, about it. Bob begged him to move to California to design amps for him. There, John designed the legendary OD-100 head and the 3+ preamp, both of which were huge hits.

After wiring racks and building amps for a few years, John got the urge to build guitars again, and he signed on as a Senior Master Builder at the Fender Custom Shop. There, he built countless amps and guitars as he further honed his craft. After a few years, John decided to go his own way and start his own company so he could be responsible for each and every detail of every guitar.

Right about then, John met a CNC programmer and software rep named Steve Smith. Steve told John that if John could draw the guitars he saw in his head on a CAD machine, he could make a CNC machine build it. They forged a partnership, and together they started Suhr.

Over the course of the last twenty-plus years, Steve and John have remained committed to using modern technology to capture the mojo of old instruments and replicate it in new instruments that are easy to play. Their obsessive attention to detail and maniacal drive for excellence have led them to set industry standards for tone, playability, fit, and finish. And, they still have a DIY spirit, literally–up until 2008, John did the finish for every single Suhr himself!

John may not finish every guitar himself these days, but his dedication to quality is apparent in each and every serial…

Wildwood Guitars says:

…The Custom 24 Retro takes its inspiration from Paul Reed Smith’s legendary first NAMM guitar from 1985. Unlike the original, this Custom 24 Retro sports a sweet Sandstorm Fade finish. Also, it has a fatter mahogany back, a smaller neck heel, and an exaggerated body carve and scoop. It sure shows off the glorious grain in that quilted maple top! And let’s not forget the Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, either! Oddly enough, the Brazilian board isn’t even the most opulent thing on the neck. That honor belongs to the real 10-carat gold outlines around the bird inlays!

Great sounds abound, too! With a pair of 85/15 humbucking pickups, the Custom 24 Retro is ready to provide you with all sorts of classic PRS tone. And, for additional versatility, it comes equipped with a “sweet switch.” Many of Paul Reed Smith’s early guitars had sweet switches, and they were awesome! Basically, sweet switches simulate the capacitance of a 100+ foot-long guitar cable. So, it tames the high-end and takes the voice of this guitar from modern heat to vintage smokiness.

The PRS Custom 24 Retro is ridiculously resonant, has buttery handfeel, and pays tribute to one of the most iconic PRS Guitars ever…

Here’s a video fo Greg Koch putting this PRS through it’s paces:
